Your customers may be familiar with features of STAINMASTER® PetProtect® carpet, but they (and you) may not know about the science behind this pet-friendly flooring—science that goes beyond industry standards.
For this carpet, the STAINMASTER® brand started with high-tech materials and then improved their capabilities. And to fully measure those capabilities, the STAINMASTER® brand devised tests that exceed industry norms. It all adds up to the first carpet and cushion system designed for pets and their people.
Here is a look at the science behind STAINMASTER® PetProtect® carpet and how it can help in your carpet sales:
This pet carpet starts with Nylon 6,6, a superhero fiber used in critical applications such as parachutes, seatbelts, and auto airbags. Nylon 6,6 is tough, durable, and stain resistant. But the STAINMASTER® brand didn’t stop there. The polymer was modified, according to Ali Fareed, STAINMASTER® senior research associate.
“Open sites on the fiber surface, where stains potentially attach, were minimized and replaced with sites that repel common household stains,” Fareed says. “A special heat-treatment process further improved resistance to staining. Hence the ability of stains to lock onto the fiber was significantly reduced.” And because the stain resistance is part of the fiber itself, it’s permanent and doesn’t wash off, he adds.
STAINMASTER® PetProtect® carpet receives treatment that reduces the attraction between pet hair and the carpet fibers, allowing the hair to be more easily removed with normal vacuuming.
The key to odor reduction lies in the STAINMASTER® cushion, which contains a surface film that is both breathable and waterproof. The film allows moisture vapors to escape from the subfloor, which helps prevent mold and mildew. But, Fareed says, “The film prevents odor-generating liquid, such as pet urine, from soaking into the cushion.” So liquids remain on the surface of the cushion where they can be removed easily by thorough cleaning, significantly reducing the source of odors.
STAINMASTER® PetProtect® carpet uses LotusFX® Fiber Shield technology to help resist soiling, which can discolor the carpet. The technology is named after the lotus flower, which is known for its ability to stay clean in dirty surroundings because the surface of the flower doesn’t allow water and dirt to stick to its petals.
“[It] mimics [the] action of a lotus flower in repelling dirt and soil, enabling easy soil release during vacuuming,” Fareed says. “The result is a cleaner, easier-to-maintain carpet.”
This pet carpet also boasts superior UV fade resistance and the ability to be cleaned with aggressive peroxide-based cleaners. This ability to resist fading is a result of how the carpet is manufactured. Most carpets attain their color through dyeing, which can disintegrate over time under UV light. But the STAINMASTER® brand colors PetProtect® carpet by introducing pigments into the carpet fibers early in the manufacturing process, so they can better resist UV light and to retain their color.
All STAINMASTER® products are thoroughly tested before they are released, and STAINMASTER® PetProtect® carpet was no exception. Performance tests for STAINMASTER® carpets include durability, stain resistance, soil resistance, and color fastness.
This pet carpet was also subjected to pet-related tests, such as hair release, pet stains, and odor reduction. An industry standard test for hair release didn’t exist, so the STAINMASTER® brand developed its own.
“STAINMASTER® carpets are often required to pass end-use tests that are much tougher than industry standards,” Fareed says. “As an example, STAINMASTER® carpets are subjected to stringent durability and wear tests where they experience loads that are greater than five times the industry standard. The end result is a pet carpet with exceptional durability.”
Knowing the science behind STAINMASTER® PetProtect® carpet helps you explain to the customer just how this pet carpet is different. And you can state your case with confidence because of the rigorous testing STAINMASTER® PetProtect® carpet receives.
